Original Mineral NYC

Original Mineral is an Australian hair color and care brand started by native Jose Bryce Smith. Jose saw first hand what chemicals did to those around her (contact dermatitis being one of the many examples) and she opened her salon. The salon I was sitting in is owned and operated by Janelle Chaplin, who holds stock in the company and also helps in product development. I was invited to the salon for a color and styling service by Janelle herself.

The Originals

I reached the 12th street Manhattan walkup about ten minutes before my scheduled appointment. It was close to 90 degrees that day and even with the light breeze I had a bit of sweat on my brow. Admittedly I also walked briskly as an incident involving my white Everlane tee and a big man with a hotdog had me scrambling to find a replacement shirt.

I entered the third floor walkup and was immediately greeted by an employee whom asked for my name and appointment time. I explained myself as she began to put the silk black salon robe on me. I was shocked when she told me that they always put the robes on the clients (hello amazing customer service). I was walked over to a large wood table and offered my choice of strawberry/lemon water or raspberry/watermelon. Served in a mason jar, I sat while a stream of vintage music played on the sound system.

The Table

The space itself was the perfect mix of bohemian and modern. The large table in which the color application and blow-drying was done had a Le Labo diffuser, magazines, lilies and a few antique nick-knacks scattered perfectly. A shelf of fashion books sat next to a stack of board games and a wall of Original Mineral hair care.

The Product

Janelle came over quickly and instantly gave me a hug. I talked about my love of the brand and she gushed about hers too saying that hair should “look like you haven’t been in a salon”. This mantra ended up being the theme of our consultation. We agreed that my hair was lacking dimension and needed something that was going to wake me up.

She kicked off her bubblegum pink Nike Air’s and began working on my hair. The technique is called painting and is meant to mimic a lived in look. I explained that the red I had was too much upkeep and that is why I wanted to color match my roots. Gutted I did not want to go back to red; she said that the color already deposited had a strawberry/golden vibe so we ran with it. Painting would hide the growth line but still keep the color that “looked so perfect” on me.

Our conversation hit so many categories I lost count. She told me about how her love of hair started when she was so young and that she spent time in London before coming to New York. While the Clean Colour Technology was developing I watched as she bustled around the space, instructed the team, and started another client.

When it was time to wash I went over to the bowl and did not need a toner as my hair lifted just as Janelle wanted it too. I experienced first hand Janelle’s hair washing technique that she is known for. The Original Detox Shampoo was used first followed by the Maintain the Mane Shampoo and Conditioner. To complete the experience, lavender oil and a warm towel was placed on my scalp for a few moments to allow the conditioner to really sink into the hair follicle. A cold rinse followed to seal it all.

The blow dry was a breeze and I had one of the best blowouts I ever received. The color was perfect and resembled the hair I had when I was young. For Janelle, the hair you had at seven years old is the one you should always have.

I left the salon with a strict reconfirmation of my love for Original Mineral and a devotee to the work that is Original Mineral NYC.  Janelle and her team create a comfortable and chic environment that stands out among the many salons of Manhattan. I also feel like Janelle might be my new favorite person ever, so there is that too.

As for the brand itself the Conquer Blonde Shampoo, Surf Bomb, and Frizzy Logic are my favorite products. You can purchase them at Sephora, Revolve, Net-A-Porter, and Neiman Marcus.
