Why We Need More Brands Like This
I have said it time and time again, nothing is more important to me than ethics and sustainability. The fashion industry is one of the most TOXIN PRODUCING businesses in the world. Constantly turning out products every week, burning ones from past seasons, or throwing them in landfills truly hurts our environment. Let us not forget that most of these products are created in third world countries where workers are treated terribly and not given any of the credit they deserve. The people cannot afford to live a bare minimum life and animals are needlessly slaughtered. Enter Cano Shoes and their NEW collection and kickstarter
Cano is a ethical and sustainable shoe company founded by two German friends, Philipp and Lukas, in Mexico. The shoes have been produced by local artisans since 2016 and use materials like natural & biodegradable crepe or vegetable tanned leather. They create Chelsea Boots, Huarache, Mules, and Sandals that follow all of the latest and classic trends. What I am really excited about is their kickstarter campaign which goes from 20th of October, 2018 - 19th November, 2018.
The shoes include what Cano refers to as “who made my clothes 2.0”, Near Field Communication technology. Essentially Cano is claiming that you can follow EVERY SINGLE STEP your shoes takes in the creation process. You install an app on your phone and when the shoes come, you give them a scan! Bam, you get to know where your leather comes from, the designer/artisan of your shoe, and how it got to you. This level of transparency with the customer is something I have yet to really see in the ethical/sustainable sphere of fashion.
So, beside the fact that the shoes look amazing, I was drawn into working with Cano because of how they treat their artisans. Philipp reached out to me to help them with their kickstarter and before I said yes, I needed to learn more about the brand. While I am vegan, and these shoes are leather, we all have our own opinions. I am highlighting this campaign because I believe this technology can truly change the way we produce clothing and accessories.
Back to the artisans… not only do Philipp and Lukas ask for consent from their designers to give you as much information as possible with the tracking app, but they also work to better the communities of their artisans. Fair wages, supporting the local farms, making sure education is a top priority, and ensuring the families all are living comfortable lives are the many initiatives Cano is taking to round out the trailblazing nature of their brand.
Much like another shoe brand I love (Nisolo), Cano will offer a shoe exchanging program. Turn in old shoes for a store credit in order to keep shoes that cannot decompose out of landfills. Speaking of which, Cano shoes will completely disappear in 25 years if left alone (may seem like a long time, but in actuality it is quite quick).
Cano is seeking an ALL OR NOTHING goal of $20,000 by late November in order to produce the 8 STYLE’s or 65 SKU (this combines both men and women) line. This means that if the goal is not reached, you do not get charged. As a consumer, this makes me feel much more safe backing a campaign that I am really passionate about anyway! I really want Cano to be able to produce these shoes because it could be a new standard for the fashion industry.
There are really amazing deals if you do support the kickstarter. An example includes getting substantial discounts on a pair of shoes or several pairs as you increase in your pledge. No matter what you decide, I hope you at least look at Cano as a brand. THESE are the brands that we need to be supporting!
I cannot decide between the Charro Boots, Mara Slipper, and the Mules.
